In my research on ancient automata and algorithms, I decided to pay attention to ancient Chinese technology and science. I am trying to put together a book on the origins of artificial life. I am more interested in the cultural history and early implementations of ideas about artificial life (not AI, so the chess-playing Turk will not get a look-in).

I had the rather unique privilege to study with a number of authorities in the field quite a few years ago and I suppose I have a lasting fondness for the rather different route the history of science and technology has taken in China.

Very early in the history of Chinese engineering and algorithmic mathematics, we have the name of Ma Jun. He invented a mechanical compass (the South-pointing chariot) as well as kind of differential gear, the kind that has been attributed, probably unjustifiably, to the Antikythera mechanism.

For anyone fascinated with algorithms, automata and their imitation of lifelike properties, Chinese sources provide a rich hunting ground.
